Quote of the Week

Take a shower, shine your shoes/ You got no time to lose/ You are young men you must be living/ So go now you are forgiven.

In Which Jennelle Gets Overly Sentimental And Cries At Everything.

I don't actually cry.  Though I did at the graduation.  I just wanted to say something about it, because, you know, my big brother graduated!  It's a big deal!

Anyways.  Here's to you, Jake.  We're all really proud of you, and we know that you will do awesome things in the future!

Love,
Jen

  5. What to do after school is an up-in-the-air thing for most people, so don't worry - you're not alone.

It's expecting a LOT for teens around your age to know exactly what career path they should pick for the rest of their lives, and to have everything laid out nicely for them to step into right after school without a hiccup. Life isn't like that. Things happen, things change, etc etc.
Plus, you're at a stage in your life when you're still trying to figure yourself out as a person and find out what it is that you're best at and what it is you want to do. It's just plain unrealistic for people to expect teenagers to know exactly what they will do for the rest of their lives, and pressuring them into picking a path and sticking to it is just stupid and doesn't help anyone.

For me personally, I wasn’t deadest keen on doing IT after school, and I had put some serious thought into joining the military. I only thought of doing IT at university straight out of school as a way to ‘buy some time’, really, and not flounder about doing nothing for the first few months out of school. I knew I had a decent knack for IT and could stick it out for a year or two until something else came up that I thought I’d want to do instead. And to be honest, I did change my course after one semester – though I just changed from straight IT to a kind of IT/Business dual degree, so it’s not going off on a massive tangent.

Keep in mind a LOT of people change their degrees/courses in university (if you decide to go to uni, obviously you don’t have to). So even if you do pick a course and change later, it’s no big deal at all, a crapload of people do the exact same thing, and I literally know a dozen or so people that have changed courses multiple times. So once you pick a course, you’re not stuck with it permanently with no options.
Another thing to keep in mind is that I read a stat somewhere saying the vast majority of people (can’t remember the percentage, but it was ridiculously high, something like 75% or something) end up taking full time jobs that have little to nothing to do with their degree/course. So know that what you choose to do in uni doesn’t define you and keep you locked into only one career type.

And, you can always take a year off (or 6 months, I don’t know things work in the ‘States) to work and build up a bit of cash to travel or do whatever, and then decide what you want to do.

Anyway, point being, you have a lot of options to consider, and also what you choose doesn’t ground you or restrict you in anyway; you can always change what you’re doing and take a different approach. You’re young – you’ve still got a LOT of time to figure out what it is you want to do when you grow up, so don’t worry about it.

    Hope that helped.

  6. This is sweet!

I have no idea what I want to do with my life. Except maybe get so fat I despise myself and dread getting out of bed every morning.
